Hazelbeck students have been learning about the significance of Shrove Tuesday as part of their recent RE day. There was a sense of excitement around school as students understood the general idea behind Shrove Tuesday as a pancake making day. Some of the activities were based around preparing pancakes and developing independent skills but there was also a real focus on the religious aspect of the day as the deeper meaning of Shrove Tuesday was explored. Students learnt about the celebration of Lent and the 40 days of abstinence from special foods leading up to the Passover. Using up left over bits of food was our theme and the students decided to have a Mardi Gras type party, wearing masks they had made earlier and eating pancakes they had prepared themselves. KS3 and KS4 took part in an egg and spoon race which engaged all the students and some bases looked at how other countries celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Everything was well organised and the students were active participants throughout the day.
