Maths at Beckfoot Hazelbeck
Maths has a strong visual and structured teaching approach which incorporates visual scaffolds like number lines, charts, and pictorial representations. Students are engaged using games, puzzles, and activities to make maths fun. Interests are incorporated into maths tasks. Classes follow consistent routines and use clear, step-by-step sequenced instructions to reduce confusion. Technology and assistive tools are utilised like talking calculators, apps, or interactive whiteboards. Support is provided through small group work or individual interventions. The use of continuous, formative assessment help to identify gaps in understanding along with providing immediate, positive, and constructive feedback to reinforce learning.
Key Goals
- Accessible learning: We deliver a maths curriculum tailored to individual abilities, learning styles, and starting points, ensuring all learners develop a strong foundation in numeracy, regardless of their needs.
- Confidence and engagement: We build our pupils’ self-esteem by celebrating progress and small-step achievements. Encouraging a positive mindset towards maths to reduce any anxiety or frustration.
- Life skills focus: Prioritising functional maths skills that are directly applicable to pupils ‘everyday life, such as time, money, and measurement. This will equip our learners with problem-solving abilities they can use in real-world scenarios.
- Personalised progression: Our approach to maths is flexible, supporting individualised pathways for each student and allowing for different rates of progression. We encourage students to master concepts at their pace to ensure understanding and retention.
- Inclusivity and equity: We ensure all students feel valued and capable in maths by addressing barriers to learning by incorporating appropriate support and resources.
