Personal Development is an integral part of our curriculum and is interwoven into all we do to support our young people to flourish and be the best version of themselves. Every opportunity to encourage young people to make connections and have positive interactions and relationships with those around them, use their voice and understand and express their emotions is utilised to develop self-confidence and resilience. Our values of Curiosity, connection, consistency, and empathy are key to each individual’s development within school. The use of emotion coaching and trauma informed strategies are a key thread to supporting young people’s development.

What is taught?
- Zones of regulation
- Emotionally available adults
- Using their voice
- Personal responsibility and making informed choices
- Cultural diversity and awareness
- Personal safety
- Community links
Zones of regulation
All students learn about zones of regulation at a level that is appropriate to them. This teaches them at early levels to associate emotions with feelings as noticed by others, labelling of simple through to complex emotions in themselves, and empathy towards others. Young people learn strategies to use which are personalised to them depending on the ‘zone’ they are in, thereby supporting regulation, building self-confidence and resilience.
Emotionally available adults
We support young people to understand, face, and deal with trauma. This is so they can build positive relationships in a place of Trust to promote readiness to learn.
Using their voice
Communication is a key strand that is taught throughout the curriculum, with each student having an expressive and receptive target. Students are encouraged to express their opinions on topics at a level appropriate to them and to respect the opinions of others.

Personality responsibility and making informed choices
PSHE, Physical Development and Life Skills (including RE) with a focus on promoting British values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, and mutual respect and tolerance. We also promote taking personal responsibility and making informed decisions for their future to remain healthy. We also teach a module on understanding protected characteristics and what makes people unique at a level appropriate to the individual.

Cultural diversity and awareness
RE weeks and events promoting different religious backgrounds. Black History Month, EDI work with a dedicated EDI group in school, and pride events. All events are designed to promote inclusion and diversity.
Personal safety
Relationships and sex education, keeping safe in the community, online safety, and the risks of unhealthy relationships are explicitly taught throughout the year. Travel training and keeping safe in the community are taught as explicit modules and reinforced throughout the year.
