Personal development

Personal development

Everything we do at Beckfoot Hazelbeck is personalised, purposeful, and meaningful. Students will learn the knowledge and skills to empower them to flourish in their future lives, while they are encouraged to overcome barriers and know and remember more, so they can succeed.

Enrichment and extracurricular

Classes access the local community as part of their Life Skills curriculum. We ensure off-site activities are tailored to the needs of the specific group, for example, visiting local colleges or sporting facilities. We also run whole-school enrichment activities throughout the day, providing students with a variety of options related to their interests, which include performing arts and sports.

The school offers the Duke of Edinburgh Award for students in KS4 and Sixth Form, which can also include the opportunity for overnight residentials.

We also take part in local community events, such as events linked to the Bradford City of Culture, or our Culture Day with other Beckfoot Trust schools.

School facilities that support our enrichment programme include:

  • Rebound therapy room
  • Swimming and hydrotherapy pool
  • Therapy room
  • Forest school

Preparation for adulthood: Careers and destinations

Career education and guidance

We are dedicated to ensuring that all students receive career education and guidance to prepare them and their families for the next phase of their journey. We understand careers as a pathway through life. Careers are explicitly taught, and every opportunity is taken to highlight encounters with employers and create work experience opportunities. All activities are designed to ensure our young people and their families can make informed decisions about their next steps. Career activities include:

  • Visits to Post 19 providers
  • Visitors in school
  • Bright Futures event
  • Discussions at EHCP reviews
  • Support with college applications
  • Multi-disciplinary with transition social workers

We also collate careers experiences using Compass Plus and do termly reviews of our careers provision against the Gatsby Benchmarks. Careers education is part of the school curriculum from year 8. Aa a part of this all students take part in Enterprise education and activities

Destinations

Students working at Entry Level 1 or above academically attend courses at Bradford, Keighley, or Shipley College. Students accessing an education based placement will maintain their EHCP.

Students may choose to attend a day service funded by adult social care. This may be a generic service or one that supports their interests and strengths e.g., based on catering or performing arts.

A small number of students move on to bespoke personalised packages with personal assistants, accessing community facilities.

Student voice

The school council meets half termly. It is made up of 26 members, including a representative from all classes. They meet as three groups and take part in group activities, making choices, having discussions, sharing, and respecting other points of view. The group helps to support whole school events e.g., World Book Day. They are currently working on the topic of attendance and what students like and dislike about school.

Preventative curriculum
