Celebrating National Poetry Day!
This week, our school has been buzzing with poetry as we celebrated National Poetry Day! Across the school, students explored a variety of poems through reading, listening, performing and creating. Some classes learned poems linked to their English topics, including poems about Neil Armstrong, using actions and key words to help bring the words to life. Others enjoyed performing action poems, full of movement and fun.

Students also explored ‘Jump or Jiggle’ by Evelyn Beyer, created their own list poems, and experimented with acrostic poems. In Rivers Class, students used the theme of rivers to inspire some fantastic descriptive poetry.
To celebrate the arrival of autumn, some classes listened to seasonal poems before heading out on a nature walk to collect leaves and natural treasures. These were then used to create beautiful autumn artwork.
We also revisited favourite rhyming stories such as The Gruffalo and learned the autumn poem Taking a Walk:
Taking a walk is so much fun,
We don’t hurry,
We don’t run.
We watch for birds; we watch for bees,
We look for all the falling leaves.
It has been wonderful to see students discovering that poetry can be fun, expressive and creative!
Here are a few of our favourite poems:
